Neil Strauss was born in Chicago and studied psychology at Columbia University. He began as a music journalist, writing for The Village Voice, The New York Times and Rolling Stone, where he became a contributing editor.
He made his name co-writing celebrity memoirs. His collaborations include Marilyn Manson's The Long Hard Road Out of Hell (1998), Mötley Crüe's The Dirt (2001) and Jenna Jameson's How to Make Love Like a Porn Star (2004). He co-wrote Kevin Hart's memoir I Can't Make This Up (2017), which follows Hart from a hard Philadelphia childhood to stand-up fame.
His own best-known book is The Game (2005), an account of the two years he spent inside a community of pickup artists who trade techniques for seducing women. Critics said the book spread manipulative tactics. Its sequel, The Truth (2015), describes his treatment for sex addiction and his later doubts about the pickup world he had helped promote.
