Ramit Sethi grew up near Sacramento, California, the son of Indian immigrants. In high school he applied for many scholarships, and they paid his way to Stanford University. There he earned a bachelor's degree in science, technology and society and a master's degree in sociology. In 2004, while still an undergraduate, he started the blog I Will Teach You to Be Rich. He also co-founded the wiki company PBworks.
I Will Teach You to Be Rich (2009) is a six-week program for people in their twenties and thirties. It tells readers to automate their savings and investments, put their money into low-cost index funds, and cut costs hard on things they do not care about. They can then spend without guilt on the things they love, which Sethi calls a "rich life". He updated the book in 2019.
Sethi hosts a podcast in which he talks with couples about money, and in 2023 he hosted the Netflix series How to Get Rich. He also sells online courses on careers and business.
