American financial analyst and writer
Joe Dominguez was born in New York City in 1938. He went to a science high school in the Bronx and to City College of New York, then worked on Wall Street as a technical stock analyst. In 1969, at 31, he left paid work for good. He had saved enough to live on the interest, which came mostly from long-term Treasury bonds. At his death he still lived on about $6,000 a year.
Around that time he met Vicki Robin. Together they tested frugal living and gave their free time to volunteer work. They found that they had followed nine steps to reach financial independence, and from the mid-1980s they taught these steps in workshops and on a cassette course. In 1992 they published them as Your Money or Your Life. The book asks readers to work out their real hourly wage and to measure each purchase in the hours of life it took to earn. The royalties went to their nonprofit, the New Road Map Foundation.
Dominguez died of lymphoma at his home in Seattle in January 1997, aged 58.
