About Gary Keller

Gary Keller is the co-founder and executive chairman of Keller Williams Realty. He was born in Pasadena, Texas, and grew up near Houston, the son of two schoolteachers. He first tried a career in music, then went to Baylor University, where he studied real estate. After he graduated in 1979, he moved to Austin and started to sell houses.

In 1983 he and Joe Williams founded Keller Williams. The firm built its model on agent training and grew into the largest real estate company in the world by agent count. Keller turned his training material into books through KellerINK, the publishing arm he set up with Jay Papasan. The Millionaire Real Estate Agent (2004) and The Millionaire Real Estate Investor (2005) came first.

The One Thing (2013), written with Papasan, is his first book outside real estate. It argues that extraordinary results come from narrowing attention to the single task that makes everything else easier or unnecessary, and from protecting a block of time for it every day. Keller lives in Austin, plays in his own band and supports local musicians through his nonprofit, ALL ATX.
