About Daniel Maté

Daniel Maté is a writer and the son of the physician and author Gabor Maté. He grew up in Vancouver, studied psychology and philosophy at McGill University, and earned a master's degree in musical theater writing from New York University.

Most of his career has been in musical theater. He writes lyrics and music for shows such as The Longing and the Short of It and Hansel & Gretl & Heidi & Günter. He has won the Kleban Prize for lyrics and a Jonathan Larson Grant. Since 2016 he and his father have run Hello Again, a workshop that helps parents and adult children repair their relationships.

The Myth of Normal (2022), written with his father, argues that much of the chronic illness and addiction in rich countries comes from trauma and the stress of modern life, not only from genes or bad luck. The book is told in his father's voice and draws on his years as a doctor. It won the 2023 Vine Award for Canadian Jewish literature.
